Education on Sustainable Development
Since the withheld reservation of the designation of the DMZ Biosphere Reserve in 2012, Yeoncheon-gun has continued to work towards the designation of the biosphere reserve together with local residents while operating the "DMZ Academy for Residents."
Through this program, participating residents became proud of the region and sympathized with the conservation and wise use of regional resources, thereby displaying much interest in the designation of the biosphere reserve. As a result, Yeoncheon-gun was able receive designation as a UNESCO biosphere reserve in 2019. In order to enhance the capacities of residents even after the designation, Yeoncheon-gun continues to operate the "2020 DMZ Academy for Residents," which focuses on "sustainable development" and "ecological and peace tourism.”
